Analysis of Competition on Horizon for iPad

from Seeking Alpha:

>>None of the would-be competitors of the iPad (AAPL) , have fielded a serious challenger. None of the pad-like Android devices on the market now are close to the iPad’s quality, and all are demonstrably short of features. For the most part, they are cheap knockoffs, and all the cheapness of design and construction are apparent to anyone who picks one up.

A more serious challenge is expected soon from Samsung one of the most competent Korean manufacturers. The Galaxy 7, pictured below, is close to a formal announcement that it will be on dealer shelves sometime in September. Samsung makes high quality products, and they have several years’ experience working with ARM chips with touch-screen control. Their new tablet should be able to stand up to the iPad in quality and in features. It will be one of the best tests of how well the Android will do on an expanded screen size.

Salesforce

from the recent conference call, transcript by Seeking Alpha:

>>Next, we’re proceeding with the build out of three new data centers. In the US, we expect to bring new data centers online in the Mid West and East Coast this year, and then we plan to open up our Japan, Tokyo data center next year.

Marc Benioff

Well, Kash I’m very bullish on cloud computing and real cloud computing which is the kind of very efficient model that Salesforce.com has been able to deliver us. I mentioned in my script, we have about 3,000 servers and that includes 1,500 that are just standing by in case there is a disaster.

You have to kind of ask yourself, if Salesforce.com did not exist for the 82,000 customers that we have and the couple of 100,000 apps that they are running in on our servers, how many servers would they need? You can quickly determine that we are operating at a level of efficiency that’s probably a few percentage points of what they would have had to buy.

That’s why, I think, cloud computing is so exciting to customers because certainly for our customers it’s a CapEx free environment, they are not buying hardware, they are not buying the kind of traditional capital expenditures necessary and taking on the risk to deliver automation into their companies. I think that’s a big juxtaposition against kind of my bullishness, and I love John Chambers I think he is probably one of the really greatest CEOs in our industry, but here company is all about CapEx.

Equinix cuts most former Switch and Data sales staff

from DatacenterDynamics:

>>Colocation service provider Equinix has let go most former members of the sales and sales engineering staff of Switch and Data, following completion of its acquisition of the latter company earlier this year, a former Switch and Data employee who wished to remain anonymous told DatacenterDynamics.

About 25 members of former Switch and Data employees have been let go so far, most of them about five weeks following closure of the $683.4m acquisition in the early days of May 2010. Equinix has also cut Switch and Data’s “agent program” – a way for providers of other related services to re-sell data center space in the company’s facilities.

An Equinix spokesperson was not immediately available to comment.

Latency Matters

from tmcnet.com:

>>Controlling latency was among the key drivers of Equinix’s recent purchase of Switch and Data, says Jarrett Appleby, chief marketing officer at Equinix, which sells data center space, power, cooling and the ability to interconnect with others.

...

Appleby calls the data center “the new network hub of this century.”

“The data center is becoming the new interconnection hub for the convergence of network and services,” he says. “It’s kind of like the wave we rode 7 or 8 years ago with the Internet peering community. The networks needed to interconnect with the content guys, and what that drove is that rapid growth rate and the need for making it easier to exchange data for Internet, which evolved to video and content distribution worldwide. The big folks we were working with were the Googles and the Microsofts and the Yahoos of the world.”

...

“You need to get these WAN solutions and new interconnection hubs really close to customers,” Appleby says. “So we were asked to go to places like Seattle and Denver, Miami and Toronto and Atlanta were the big five. And along for the ride came an even deeper penetration into Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and Boston and places like that. So it moved us from a U.S./North America coverage from roughly 30-millisecond latency for 95 percent of the population and for enterprise clients to within less than 10 milliseconds away for 94 percent of the U.S. population.”

That 20 millisecond difference is important, he notes, because it can have a significant impact on how the application performs and, thus, the end user quality of experience. And while that applies to a variety of applications, the big driver of the push to lower latency by bringing content closer to the edge is cloud services, says Appleby of Equinix, which has more than 130 cloud and SaaS companies (like Amazon) within its data center and colocation sites.

MassDevice Q&A: Accuray president and CEO Euan Thomson

an interview with Accuray's CEO:

>>MassDevice: Can you spell out what Accuray's distribution and R&D deal with Siemens means for your company on the global stage?

ET: There are really three elements to it. We're a capital equipment company, we're selling the CyberKnife for multiple millions of dollars. Most of the players in the field of capital medical equipment are huge international companies. We're not, we're still growing and relatively small. But we've been successful and we now have more than 200 systems installed and we do have a worldwide distribution channel. So the key for our relationship with Siemens on the sales side is to look at the type of sale where we may not even be invited to participate. For example, somebody's building a whole hospital or they're building a whole department and they're looking for all the equipment they need from one vendor. With the arrangement with Siemens, we have the ability to include a CyberKnife as part of that purchase. It's not a customer that we'd normally have seen. There are also certain parts of the world where we're just not big enough to have effective distribution and we're working with Siemens to put together some distribution agreements in those territories.
